Block sheave bearings are designed to run with grease lubrication. Oil is not used because it can leak past seals, contaminate the rope, and wash away the grease that protects the bearing. Plus, oil on the rope–sheave interface reduces friction where it’s needed to grip the rope, increasing the risk of the rope slipping under load. For most blocks you’ll simply use the grease specified by the manufacturer and keep the bearings properly lubricated or sealed as designed. So, you should not keep block sheave bearings lubricated with oil.
